Client Objective
Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio wanted a donation form built in Luminate Online for their End of Year Holiday Campaign, “Light Up the Lawn, Light Up a Life”.
This donation form would trigger butterfly sculptures to illuminate in real-time when a donor gave a donation of $10 or more.
In partnership with Goodbeast, and Hart Inc., we worked to achieve this goal and contributed to a new holiday tradition that builds hope and joy for hospitalized children, families and the health care heroes caring for them.
Our Solution
In the months preceding the campaign, we worked with Nationwide Children’s Hospital and their event partners to develop a donation form that would reflect the campaign strategy.
This process included discovery, design, development, and testing to ensure the best donor experience. The donation form included:
- Special branding for the campaign
- Optimized mobile design that allowed donors to make a quick donation via their cell phones
- Various payment methods to make it more convenient to donate, this included: credit card, ACH, PayPal and BlackBaud Checkout (including Click to Pay, Apple Pay and Venmo)
- Specialized scripts that triggered the butterflies to light up through Google Tag Manager
- A live-feed video which was included on the Thank You Page and in Autoresponders so donors could see the butterfly sculptures light up in real-time

The Results
The “Light Up the Lawn, Light Up a Life” campaign ran from November 16, 2022 through December 31, 2022. Through this process we developed a donation form that provided donors an interactive experience of seeing the butterfly sculptures illuminate in real-time.
The goal of the campaign was to increase engagement with donors, and we were able to achieve that with the interactive donation form.
Donors were able to make their gift from anywhere, using their cellphone or laptop and watch the lawn light up via a live-stream video feed. The lawn in front of Nationwide Children’s, along with five community locations through Columbus, OH, was transformed with an impressive butterfly-themed light display.
The donation form also improved the donor experience by providing multiple payment options. The collaboration between Nationwide, Goodbeast and Hart Inc. and Doing Good Digital created a cohesive, exciting experience for donors.
